SRT for Non Melanoma Skin Cancer

NMSC includes Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma. These cancers are rarely life-threatening but can cause complications if they are left untreated. What is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs Surgery is a commonly used method of removing Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma. During surgery, the tissue is removed and examined for cancer cells. This process is repeated until no cancer cells remain. While effective, the surgery can cause complications and is not always the best alternative for certain patient populations.

What is SRT?

Superficial Radio Therapy (SRT), is a non-surgical alternative to Mohs Surgery. It is ideal for many different people, especially those over 60 who are more likely to have a higher risk for surgical complications. The benefits of SRT include:

  • No downtime of lifestyle restrictions
  • No unsightly scarring
  • No need for post-treatment cosmetic or reconstructive surgery

How Does SRT Work?

SRT works by delivering a low dose of precisely calibrated radiation to the lesion site. A patient needs to receive a number of treatments over the span of a couple of weeks. These treatments are fast and painless. You can resume all of your regular activities before and after treatment.

Superficial Radio Therapy is an especially good option for lesions that appear on hard-to-operate areas like the nose, ears, scalp, lower legs, and more. One of our patients was able to save his second ear by using SRT!
